If you’ve had a chance to swing by Shepherd’s Bush Market recently, you would’ve noticed a very exciting new renovation taking place… An unused arch sat outside of the market manager’s office has finally been transformed into a stunning, modern and chic cafe! Serving up quite the selection of fresh food cooked on site, ‘Richie’s’ has already taken off as a huge hit amongst customers and traders alike! We spoke to owner Richie Abalayan to find out more…
Tell us a little about yourself; Well, my name is Richie, I’m 48 years old and I’m a professional chef. I worked full time for many years before deciding it was time to set up my own business, so, with my wife Leony by my side, that’s exactly what I’ve done!
What food do you have on offer? Oh, we have lots on offer, everyday we’re serving up barbecue cooked right outside so you can expect burgers and some great grilled meats every day. On top of that, one of our main focus here is our fusion of Filipino and Asian cuisine, it’s served up everyday but we also hold buffets on the weekends. One of our best sellers right now is a traditional Filipino breakfast dish called ‘Tapsilog’, ‘Tapa’ translates to fried beef, ‘Si’ to fried rice and ‘log’ to egg – and that’s exactly what it is! All of our meat is halal too, so everyone can eat here.
Do have dessert options? Yes, of course, we have waffles that you wouldn’t believe! Our most popular is our decadent chocolate, it’s a chocolate chip waffle which has molten chocolate inside so it melts in the middle when you eat it. Served up with chocolate and vanilla ice cream, drizzled in hot fudge sauce!
What’s the most unique thing you have on offer? Definitely ‘Halo Halo’, it’s a Filipino dessert which directly translates to ‘Mix Mix’. It’s essentially our traditional sundae, it’s shaved ice mixed with sweetened beans, palm seeds, cooked plantain, flavoured rice krispies, condensed milk, ice cream, cocoa jelly, shredded melon and much more! Trust me, it’s not famous in the Philippines for nothing, you’ll love it!
Why did you choose Shepherd’s Bush Market? For it’s diversity and broad cultural mix of customer, we knew this was the place for us. It’s a great place to set up our kind of business.
How has it been so far? It’s been buzzing here, we’ve been busy every day. Many customers and traders have said we’re serving up the best food they’ve ever had!
What do you have in store for us? Fresh food cooked on site every day. We’re always bringing in new dishes too, we have a Chef’s special every day. Today’s is beef brisket soup cooked with plantain and cabbage. You can come and enjoy a delicious meal in our summer garden right outside!
Any fun facts for us? We actually buy our meat from the butchers in the market. We’ve been a huge hit with the traders, one of our neighbours picks up one of our burgers for his son EVERY day – apparently, he’s addicted to them!
